Snakey Wormholes
A small game I did on Pico8, a fantasy console for making retro style games. It's the first game I made on the platform.

Snake but with physics
So for this game I wanted to start with something simple and classic, and Snake seemed like a simple enough game. But when I started playing it I realized that grabbing the food was too hard due to how fast the snake moved, but making the snake move slower made the game to boring since the screen is so big. This is how I decided to add physics to the food, and make it so that it gets sucked towards you when you apporach.

Snake but with Portals
I wanted to have a warp around effect for the game, and it turned out to be relatively easy to implement, so I thought, "why stop there?" That's how I came up with the idea of leaving a portal behind whenever you eat. This would make it so that as you eat more and more the screen will fill with more portals, making it easier for you to accidentally hit yourself. This makes the game get harder even faster, which is important since without the portals, the game would be too easy since the screen is so big relative to the player.

Many small details
With this game I also wnated to try adding polish. I added features that I usually wouldn't think too much about, like an options menu, sound effects, particles effects, etc. Even really small things like having the arrows in the options menu wobble back and forth slowly. Making this was a reminder of how hard it is to make a game feel just right, how many little details go into making it feel complete, and I still could have added more stuff, but I felt like I wanted to move on to other projects. The detail that I feel the most proud of is the transition between the main menu and the game. I put a lot of effort into the wormhole animations.
